Oxygen Dissociation Curve — Right vs Left Shift
Right shift = ↓ affinity (more O2 to tissues)
Mnemonic: CADET, face Right
• CO2 ↑
• Acid ↑ (low pH)
• DPG ↑ (2,3-DPG)
• Exercise
• Temperature ↑
Left shift = ↑ affinity (O2 stays bound to Hb)
• Opposite of above
• Fetal Hb (HbF)
• CO poisoning
• Methaemoglobin
• Alkalosis
Bohr effect: pH/CO2 changes shift curve (Right shift in tissues)
Haldane effect: deoxygenated Hb carries more CO2
