The talocrural (ankle) joint is a hinge between the tibia/fibula mortise and the talus — most stable in dorsiflexion.
STRUCTURE
• Mortise: distal tibia + medial malleolus + lateral malleolus (fibula), gripping the trochlea of the talus.
• The talus is wider anteriorly → dorsiflexion (toes up) is the close-packed, most stable position; plantarflexion is least stable (more sprains).
